Let it snow!

I was so excited about the New Year’s Day snowfall! At a depth of about 4” the snow covered enough of the ‘natural’ bird food on our property to entice droves of hungry birds to the feeders. Especially numerous were the ground feeders like Harris’s Sparrows and Dark-eyed Juncos.

Four days later, on my count days, nearly all the snow had melted. What rotten luck. Numbers had gone back down to their pre-snowfall level. The only ‘exciting’ news (if you can call it that) was a lone American Robin that came to the heated bird pond first thing in the morning while everything else was still frozen.

The data submission form for Project FeederWatch asks about snow cover – it really does make a difference at the feeders!
