Results of the 2025 Lawrence CBC
By Galen Pittman, Lawrence CBC Compiler

Thirty (plus 9 at feeders) participants, in 12 parties, found 84 species + 4 count week on 20 December 2025, on the occasion of the 126th National Audubon Christmas Bird Count and the 82nd Lawrence Christmas Bird Count. Finding 100 species makes for a great count and the last few years have been an incredible run for this count, but these things run in cycles and are greatly affected by weather This year was a very good effort by all involved.

We recorded only 13 species of waterfowl and 10 other water birds and missed many normally common species. In general, the number of individuals per species was low with some notable exceptions. We had good numbers of Common Goldeneye (834), Red-shouldered Hawks (24) and Pileated Woodpeckers (12) and Bald Eagles (81). Setting an all-time high species count is difficult after over 80+ years of effort! New for the count, although only for count week, was a Painted Bunting at a bird feeder!!

Other unusual species were Ross’s Goose, Common Loon, Horned Grebe, Prairie Falcon (count week only), American Pipit, Chipping Sparrow, Savannah Sparrow (count week only), Lincoln’s Sparrow, and Pine Siskin. Notable misses this year (including many common ducks!) were Am. White Pelican, Pied-billed Grebe, Wild Turkey (count week only!), Lapland Longspur, Spotted Towhee. and Brown-headed Cowbird. Northern Bobwhite and Loggerhead Shrike continue to be very hard to find, despite being regulars in the past.
Thanks to all of this year's participants and hope to see you all again next year for the 127th National Audubon Christmas Bird Count. View 2026 dates for your area.
